Possible Causes of Recurrent Miscarriages
Recurrent miscarriage is a condition associated with repeated 2 or more conceptions pregnancy loss. It is different from infertility (inability to have children). This condition is emotionally, physically and socially tormenting for the affected woman. However, it is essential to seek medical attention if you have a miscarriage.
Causes of recurrent miscarriage
The causes of recurrent miscarriage are many. However, there are several disorders which are associated with recurrent miscarriage, some of which are treatable. The possible causes are classified as follows:
Genetic causes. These are chromosome related problems. Women and men with more than 35 years have greater susceptibility to producing sperms and eggs with some chromosomal abnormalities. These may lead to a miscarriage. This is the most common cause.
Anatomical causes. These are physical abnormalities in the woman’s reproductive system. The uterus might have an abnormal shape or the cervix may be weak and fail to support the pregnancy. Anatomical causes which may lead to a miscarriage include uterine scarring, fibroids, congenital problems, and cervical insufficiency.
Immunity factors. These factors cause recurrent miscarriage by decreasing maternal immune tolerance in relation to the fetus. The serious conditions in this category include antiphospholipid syndrome which is an autoimmune disease, thyroid antibodies, increase of uterine NK cells, paternal HLA sharing, and minor male-specific histocompatibility. This is treatable if advice is taken timely.
Hormonal causes. Hormonal problems have also been associated with recurrent miscarriages. Though their role in recurrent miscarriages is controversial, they are always checked during the assessment. Possible conditions under this category are high levels of prolactin, thyroid disorders, and insulin resistance
Unknown causes. About 50% of couples with recurrent miscarriages have unknown causes. In such a case, nothing can really be done. The good thing is that about 70% of those who have miscarriages due to unknown causes eventually have a successful normal pregnancy.
After two or three miscarriages, a comprehensive evaluation is done to identify the possible cause of the miscarriage. Some causes can be treated. It is therefore essential that you have a trusted and experienced doctor. There are various Fertility Centers in India offering these services.
